The new sport of SpikeBoarding was created by Enrique Cubillo from New York City (a native of Madrid Spain) in August, 2010.
SpikeBoarding is a simplified form of Nordic XC roller skiing only on one board instead of two. The world's best XC Nordic skiers all roller ski 70% of the season. SpikeBoarding combines all the upper body kinetics of Nordic XC skiing with the kinetics of a skateboard and scooter kick.
SpikeBoarding's sole focus is high performance propulsion and efficacy up hills and on flats. Same as roller skiing there is no focus on maximizing down hill speeds. Down hills in fact are treated same as roller skiing. Low rolling hills are preselected for circuits and when racing up mountains athletes return down walking or in cars or on bicycles.
Equipment Required: Clothing same as inline skating and cycling or Nordic skiing. Helmet like cycling. Gloves and west guards like inline skating. Helmet like road cycling. A SpikeBoard. A SkateBoard Spike.
Sport Description
The sport consists of two primary strokes. Stand Up Spike ( a derivative of double poling XC Nordic skiing) and Cubi-X-Cross ( a combination of Nordic XC upper body diagonal stride arm action combined with the scooter/skateboard kick) ON SpikeBoarding race courses there are three stroke indicators physically posted on the pavement. O = indicates downhill only, feet and spike may not engage pavement. I = SUS or Stand Up Spike stroke must be used. X = CXC or Cubi-X-Cross must be engaged only.
