Beach soccer, which is also called beasal, is a sport similar to association football but played on a beach or sand. It is a type of 5-a-side soccer.
Beach soccer is played between two teams with five players each, including the goalkeeper. An unlimited number of substitutions is allowed. The players are not allowed to wear shoes, but they are allowed to have ankle guards.
A beach soccer game can last up to thirty six minutes (three 12-minute periods). At the end of regulation, if the result is a draw, the match goes into three minutes of extra time; this is followed by a penalty shootout.
Just like association football, yellow and red cards are issued. In beach soccer, if a player receives a yellow card, the player must leave the pitch for two minutes and the team must continue playing. If a player receives a red card, he is dismissed from the game. Some of the popular beach soccer competitions are: FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, Intercontinental Cup, and Mundialito de Clubes.
