Freestyle snowboarding is a winter sport in which athletes perform various on-air and ground tricks while riding a snowboard. It is the most popular style of snowboarding as it provides athletes with the most challenge and thrill. The primary objective of the sport is to perform various types of jumps, rail slides, tricks, rides on half-pipes, and switch riding. Freestyle snowboarding is currently practiced and contested by both men and women.
Some of the competitive events conducted for freestyle snowboarding are the half-pipe, quarter-pipe, slopestyle, and big air. The half-pipe is regarded as the most popular of them all and is included in most events.
Though most of the moves in freestyle snowboarding are on-air moves like aerial flips, spins, and grabs, there are also some tricks that are performed on the ground like ground spins, bonking, and grinding.
A snowboard, boots, bindings, helmets, goggles and protective gear are all required equipment for the sport. The snowboards and boots used are usually softer than the regular ones to reduce the weight for on-air maneuvers.
The FIS world championships, the Winter X Games, and the FIS World Cup are the three major events that extensively feature competitions for various codes of freestyle snowboarding.
