The new sport of Short-Leg Football was created by Dharmesh Dhebar of England, UK in 2000. It is basically football (soccer) played from the knees down.
This non-serious game can be played by all ages and all fitness levels and in the garden or on an in-door pitch. The tied knees restrict the movement of the legs so no hard shots can occur, no sliding tackles, no high jumps and certainly no sprinting. This lowers the chance of injury but greatly increases the level of fun.
Just watching this game will have everyone laughing but playing it is even better!
Equipment Required: As for in-door football but a lighter ball and something comfortable to tie the knees together. At this stage we use an old scarf or similar.
Sport Description
Essentially the same as in-door football (on the same or similar pitch size) but with a lighter ball (sponge ball if preferred) and, of course, with the knees tied together.
Also:
- No set times (perhaps 15-30 min. each half and may include player rotations/substitutions during the game as desired)
- the gap between tied knees is 0 cm to 4 cm in general, but this rule is flexible (e.g. if this limit is too uncomfortable for an individual)
- at least three players on each side and a maximum of seven
- if players' knees become untied during the game, they must leave the pitch immediately and retie them. A sub may come on at this point if desired.
- a sense of humour is essential!
