Shooting was first part of the Asian Games at the second event in 1954, and has been on the program ever since. Chinese athletes have won the most shooting medals.

- At the first shooting competition in 1954, there were two pistol events, three rifle events and trap as a shotgun event in the program, open to both men and women. The events in the shooting at the Asian Games have changed over time. Currently, there are separate events for men and women.
