Samoa at the Olympics
Samoa, which is also referred to as the Independent State of Samoa and American Samoa, first competed at the Summer Olympic Games in 1984, at the time called Western Samoa. Samoa’s National Olympic Committee was established in 1983 and acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the same year. The Pacific nation is still seeking its first-ever medal in the Olympiad.
Samoa’s small delegation comprising of six athletes saw action in five sports (athletics, canoeing, judo, swimming and weightlifting) in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. The most notable Samoan would probably Anne Cairns who competed in the Women's K-1 200-meters and Women's K-1 500 meters and finished 7th on her heats and failed to sneak into the next round. The two Samoan participants in the track and field also failed to get past the preliminary around as Jeremy Dodson submitted a clocking of 20.51 seconds in the 200-meter run event to finished firth on his heat while Alex Rose registered 57.24 meters in the men’s discus throw event.
