Puerto Rico at the Winter Olympics
Puerto Rico, which became a territory of the United States in 1898, first took part at the Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia in 1984 and participated at the Winter Games until 1998. In 2002, a bobsleigh team was entered, but did not compete as one athlete did not meet the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee rules about eligibility. After this, the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee withdrew the recognition of the Winter Sports Federation.
Despite alpine skier Kristina Krone qualifying for both the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, both times the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee did not allow her to compete.
In 2018, the opportunity for Puerto Rico to send athletes opened up again. The island territory was represented by 17-year-old skier Charles Flaherty, whose family moved to the island from Cincinnati in 2010.
Puerto Rico has already won quite a few medals in boxing, athletics, tennis and wresting at the Summer Olympics, but it is still hoping to win its first-ever medal at the Winter Games.
