Fitness Testing Newsletter: Sept 2008
Hi and welcome to the September 2008 fitness testing newsletter. It has been a few months since the last newsletter as I have been traveling with my family, and although I planned to keep doing work as we traveled along, I am not getting as much done as I had hoped. In this newsletter I bring to your attention a program running out of the Australian Institute of Sport, where they are trying to recruit future sporting stars online.
AIS Talent Identification
Fitness testing is being used to try and find Australia's next sporting champions. The National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program at the Australia Institute of Sport (AIS), as part of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), has had a very successful history of recruiting and developing athletes in non mainstream sports, such as rowing and skeleton. They are currently targeting Canoe/Kayak on their website (eTID), though other sports are also considered. Individuals are able to submit results from fitness tests done at home, and if their results are up to a certain level they will be invited to be tested further and placed into a talent identification program.
Online Talent Identification
The Australian National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program have developed an online electronic talent identification tool that is simple to use, free and allows potential athletes to assess their sporting potential. The program is only available to Australian athletes aged from 12 up to 29 years. The interactive website allows users to enter their results from a series of simple 'home-based' fitness tests. If your results are identified as above average, you will be encouraged to visit a Talent Assessment Centre (TAC) to be retested. Then athletes can be targeted into specific NTID development programs, with support for travel, training and coaching being provided.
There are three section; General Tests, Sport Specific and Elite Athlete.
- General Tests: The general test protocols are: standing height, body mass, arm span, push-ups, vertical jump, 40m sprint and either a shuttle run (beep test) or 1.6 km run. Descriptions of how to conduct each of these tests are available online, as well as equipment required and forms for recording and submitting results.
- Sport Specific: There are specific tests for those interested in the sports of canoeing, cycling, rowing, triathlon and athletics.
- Elite Athlete: They are also looking for existing elite athletes that are looking for a career change. All they need to do is provide basic personal details and sport related information.
