Peru at the Olympics
Peru first competed officially at the Olympic Games in 1936, although some consider Carlos de Candamo, a competitor in fencing at the 1900 Games, of Peruvian nationality. The Peru’s official National Olympic Committee is Comité Olímpico Peruano and was incepted founded in 1924 and acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1936.
Peru has piled up a total of four medals: one gold and three silvers. The first gold medal of the nation in the Games was captured by Edwin Vásquez who won the men’s 50-m pistol event.
Peru’s national volley team captured the nation’s third medal winning silver in the volleyball competition at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Juan Giha raised the country’s medal haul to four by taking the silver medal in the skeet at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Peru sent its biggest delegation of 29 athletes at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games. The nation’s campaign was spearheaded by Stefano Peschiera in sailing and Gladys Tejeda and Ines Melchor in the marathon. The flag bearer of Peru in Rio was 51-year-old trap shooter, Boza, who won silver at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games.
The South American country has also takem part in the Winter Olympic Games since 2010.
