The Western African Republic of Niger established their national Olympic committee, the Nigerien Olympic and National Sports Committee, in 1964 and the International Olympic Committee officially recognized them in the same year just in time for them to participate in the Summer Games that was held in Tokyo, Japan in 1964.
Boxer Issaka Dabore fought in the welterweight division in 1964 and he was the sole representative of Niger that year. In the next Summer Games, held in Mexico City, Mexico, Issaka Dabore returned to compete but this time he was accompanied by Dary Dasuda who fought in the bantamweight division.
In 1972, Issaka Dabore returned again with three more boxers but this time, he was able to win the bronze in the flyweight division after defeating Japanese boxer Kyoji Shinohara in the quarter finals in Munich, West Germany. Niger will miss the next two Summer Games but come back in 1984.
After their return in 1984, Niger has never missed any of the Summer Games.
Niger, like most of its African neighbors, have never participated in the Winter Olympics mainly due to their shortage of facilities for training or athletes to be trained for any of the Winter sports.
