Nicaragua at the Olympics
Nicaragua made their Olympic debut in 1968 and has attended almost all of the Summer Games except when they chose to boycott the 1988 Summer Olympics being held in Seoul, South Korea in support of North Korea.
The closest that they got to winning their first-ever Olympic medal was when their national baseball team that represented them in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. This was the first time that the Nicaraguan baseball team had entered the Olympic Games and they went on to defeat powerhouses like Australia, Italy, the Netherlands and South Korea before losing to Cuba in the semifinals who went on and won the gold that year. Also, because of the baseball team, the 1996 Nicaraguan Olympic delegation was the largest that they have ever had.
Legendary Nicaragua boxer Alexis Arguello never competed in the Olympic Games, he was the country's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
They also have never been to the Winter Olympics and are yet to win their first Olympic medal.
