Mountainboarding is an action sport that was derived from snowboarding, that involves riding a mountainboard on different types of off-road courses. The sport is also known as Dirtboarding, Offroad Boarding, and All-Terrain Boarding (ATB).
The boards used for the sport are specially designed with four wheels and tires, shocks, and breaks. The board also has front and rear straps that are used to fasten the board to the rider.
Since the nature of the sport is prone to fall and injuries, riders wear several protective gears, like helmets, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, padded shorts, and other body amour.
There are four major formats of mountainboarding, which are,
- Downhill - Involves races where riders descend downhill individually on courses that are relatively long. Downhill races are time-trial based, where the rider to complete the course in the fastest time is the winner
- Boardercross - Races are conducted on specially designed courses where two to four riders compete in a single race. The rider to cross the finish line first is the winner.
- Freestyle - The competitions involve riders performing different kind of tricks on slopes. Routines are judged based on tricks performed and points are awarded. The rider with the most points is the winner.
- Freeriding - A non-competitive recreational format that involves riding on different terrains.
