Edwin Moses: Athletics
Edwin Corley Moses (born: August 31, 1955) is a former American track and field athlete, considered to be the greatest 400 meter hurdler in the history of the sport. Aside from running, he is also an innovative reformer in the areas of Olympic eligibility and drug testing. He was elected the first Chairman of the Laureus World Sports Academy in 2000, an international service organization of world-class athletes. He served and promoted drug-free sports and the rights of amateur athletes at all levels.
Greatest Sporting Achievements
Moses won 122 races in a row between 1977 and 1987. He also won two gold medals at the 1976 Summer Olympics with 47.63 time and the 1984 Summer Olympics with 47.63 time. In the 1988 Olympics held in Seoul, he won a bronze medal at 400 meter hurdles with 47.56 time. He set world records in his event four times. Moses became the 1980 Track & Field News Athlete of the Year despite the Olympic boycott that kept him from competing in Moscow. He was later awarded the USA Track & Field’s Jesse Owens Awards in 1981 becoming the first recipient of the award. He is ranked # 47 on ESPN’s SportCentury 50 Greatest Athletes.
Why Was He So Good?
Edwin Moses utilized applied sciences to perfect the technical aspects of his athletic performances in the 400-meter hurdles. He used his intelligence, using his physics and industrial engineering major at Morehouse, even earning an MBA from Pepperdine to win the event. He dominated the intermediate hurdles to an extend that no man has ever achieved in this or any other event.

- In his hometown in Dayton, Ohio, Miami Boulevard West and Sunrise Avenue was renamed “Edwin C. Moses Boulevard”.
- Edwin Moses is an advocate for peace.
- He is currently working as a financial consultant in investment management consulting and managed money via the Consulting Group. It is a division of the NY-based investment bank Salomon Smith Barney.
- He is also a scuba diver, a licensed private pilot of single-engine aircraft and holds an instrument rating.
