The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island nation that consists of four states (Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap) that has a total island count of 607 islands, located just a bit north of the equator.
While most of the more traditional sports have been forgotten, the sports that was introduced to the islands by foreign nations such as the United States and Japan have become quite popular.
Baseball has become very popular mainly due to foreign influence but their national baseball team did take home the bronze in the 2005 South Pacific Games. Other popular sports include basketball, football (soccer) and athletics.
The Federated States of Micronesia officially became a member of the Olympic Games in 1997. They first joined the Olympic Summer Games in the 2000 Sydney Games where they sent 5 athletes for Athletics (2), Swimming (2) and Weightlifting. In the 2004 Athens Games, John Howard set the FSM national record for the 100 m (10.85) and his twin brother, Jack, represented the FSM in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London, the FSM sent their youngest athlete, swimmer Debra Daniel, who was 17 at the time.
