Mauritius is officially referred to as the Republic of Mauritius, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean. Ram Ruhee established Mauritius' national Olympic Committee in 1971 which he headed until 2008. It was officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee the very next year after it was founded.
However, Mauritius will not make their Olympic debut until 1984 partly because they opted to participate in the US-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, USSR.
Since their debut in 1984 though, they have not missed a single Summer Olympics meet but they are yet to participate in their first Winter Olympics like many of the African countries near it.
In August 22, 2008, boxer Bruno Julie made Mauritius history when he became their very first Olympic medalist when he took the bronze in the bantamweight weight class in Beijing, People's Republic of China.
