Edoardo Mangiarotti
When it comes to the sport of fencing no one will come close to the Italian Maestro, Edoardo Mangiarotti, who happens to be the most prolific winner in the Olympic Games and World Championships. Mangiarotti is a master swordsman who collected a whopping total of 39 Olympic and World Championships medals, which is the most in the sport of all-time.
Edoardo Mangiarotti, is an immovable force in the individual and team events in the fencing competition at the Olympics as he piled up a medal haul of six gold, five silver and two bronze from 1936 to 1956. He also collected 13 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals at the World Championships from 1937 to 1938.
Fencing truly runs in the veins of the family as it was his father, a master swordsman himself and a national titlists 17 times, urged him to shift to being a southpaw from innately right-handed to give him edge in the sport. Mangiarotti started taking fencing lessons when he was 8 years old together with his brother, Dario, who is also an accomplished fencer. Dario won 12 medals in the Olympics and World Championship. Mangiarotti was 17 when he made his first appearance at the Olympiad as he aided his team capture the gold medal in the team épée gold event.
