The Maldives Olympic Committee was created and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1985. Three years after that, they participated in their very first Olympic Games. They sent a delegation consisting of seven athletes to Seoul, South Korea to represent them in various athletics events.
Since this official debut, they have attended each and every Summer Games but with a relatively smaller delegation. Their debut Olympic team of 1988 is the largest that they have sent to date.
Most of their athletes are for athletics and swimming, however, in 2012, they had their first-ever representative for badminton. Mohamed Ajfan Rasheed also happens to be the flag-bearer for the Maldivian delegation to the Summer Olympics in London. Unfortunately he was not able to advance past the elimination round.
They also have never participated in any of the Winter Games and they are yet to win their first-ever Olympic medal.
