The Macrobiotic Diet is more of a “way of life” instead of it being a structured diet that involves eating foods rich in vitamins and minerals and also balanced yin and yang properties.
This includes the spiritual part of living, seeing the bigger picture of life, considering trials and triumphs as gifts for us to have a positive outcome in life.
Foods to eat during the Macrobiotic Diet
- Whole grains –should be 50 to 60 percent of your meal. (brown, wild rice, whole heat, millet)
- Organic vegetables - should be 30 percent of your meal. (Green leafy vegetables, except spinach)
- Beans – should be 10 percent of your meal. (fermented beans like tempeh, miso, whole beans, legumes, chickpeas, lentils, tofu)
- Soups – should contain grains, sea vegetables, beans and leafy vegetables.
- Sea vegetables – (seaweeds, dulse, kombu, kelp, arame)
- Fruits –rarely eaten during the diet, 3x a week. Perfect as desserts/snacks. Avoid bananas, pineapples and other tropical fruits.
- Fishes – 1 to 3 times per week only.
- Nuts
- Organic tea
- Desserts -- (sweetened with barley malt, maple syrup, rice syrup)
The Macrobiotic Diet allows you to eat a slice of cake, a scoop of ice cream, a shot of alcoholic beverage but with moderation. Do not overeat or drink.
Avoid these if possible
- Milk
- Alcohol
- Foods with white, brown or other type of sugar
- Fruit juice
- Cream
- Heavy spices
- Foods with chemicals, dyes, insecticides, preservatives
- Caffeine
- Refined oils
- Fruit juice
- Ice cream
- Yogurt
- Ghee
During the Macrobiotic Diet, it is known to eat whole foods. The body is encouraged to avoid foods that are either too yin or too yang because it may affect our life’s balance.

If your body has too much yin energy, it will become an ill body. Yang cures illness but is interconnected with the yin energy of the body. Always remember that a balanced of yin and yang is a healthy life.
