Considered as a successor state from what was known as Yugoslavia, North Macedonia is a relatively new state. They declared their independence in 1991 and became a member of the UN in 1993. Although athletes from this region have been involved in international sport previously, they did not compete under their own name until the break up of Yugoslavia in 1991, as was also Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia-Montenegro.

Basketball is also very popular and their national basketball team became part of FIBA in 1993. Since then, they have participated in three Eurobaskets with their best as 4th place in 2011.
