Kuwait is one of the wealthier Middle Eastern countries and is largely influenced by European sports. This is why it is no surprise that Kuwait has fallen in love with football. The Kuwait Football Association is the main governing body for anything football in the country. The men’s national football team is yet to be considered a superpower in the international football stage but have garnered some measure of success in the AFC Asian Cup and FIF World Cup. They were the AFC Asian Cup champions (1980) as well as a runner-up in 1976 and third place in 1982. They did step foot in the World Cup but did not perform as well as they hoped. Some of the best football players from Kuwait include Ahmad Ajab and the multi-talented Abdulaziz Al-Anberi who is a remarkably good football as well as a basketball and volleyball player.
Another popular sport in Kuwait is basketball and their national basketball team has played in the FIBA Asian Championship eleven times. This makes them one of the most successful teams in the Middle East. Other sports that are gaining popularity in the region include cricket, handball and rugby union. The Kuwait national handball team is widely recognized as one of the very best in Asia and of the Arab world.
