Kazakhstan at the Winter Olympics
Kazakhstan first competed at the Winter Olympic Games as a sovereign country in 1994 and has participated at all Winter Olympics since then. Before the disintegration of the USSR, Kazakhstan was part of the USSR team that competed at both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games from 1952 to 1988.
The nation’s top producing winter sports are cross-country skiing, biathlon, figure skating and speed skating.
The former Soviet republic had a good performance on its first-ever appearance at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games as its placed 12th and garnered 3 medals (1 cold and 2 silver) thanks to Vladimir Smirnov. The cross-country skiing ace earned the nation’s first gold medal when he topped the men’s 50 km classical event in cross-country skiing and captured two more silver medals in the men's 10 km classical and men's 15 km freestyle pursuit events.
