The jump mat is one of many systems available for measuring vertical jump height. See the discussion and list of available methods. This vertical jump equipment uses what is called a Abalakov’s belt, to directly measure the jump height.
About: The vertical jump mat is based on a mechanical wheel jump-meter. The Vertical Jump Mat is a square mat 22" x 22" x 9mm thick, made out of Versa Flex. It will not slip or tear and is puncture resistant.
Instructions: The subject wears a waist belt attached to measuring tape that is grounded to the mat. Set the tape to zero then jump as high as you can. The tape measure shows how the height of the jumps. When you're done testing, roll it up and take it away.
Disadvantages: the height measured will be inaccurate if you do not jump straight up and down. This system can also limit the athlete’s movement. Further errors may occur due to the moment of inertia of the tape, and if the tape is loose at the start.
Advantages: This device is inexpensive, portable and easy to use. Testing can be conducted on your own. You get a true vertical height displacement of the torso, and is not reliant on the subject timing their jump to touch something at the peak of the jump. The apparatus can be used indoors or outdoors.
