Japan has participated in every Rugby World Cup since the first in 1987. Prior to 2015, they had only just one win, against Zimbabwe in 1991. At the 2015 World Cup they had an upset win over the South Africans in their first match.
The 2019 Rugby World Cup was held in Japan. In 2019 they had their best performance at the World Cup, making the quarter finals.

- Japan has the distinction of having the most points that have ever been scored against them at a World Cup. New Zealand beat them by 145 in 1995.
- In the early stages of the 2015 tournament, Japan had a famous win over South Africa. Their 34-32 victory in Brighton is regarded as one of the biggest upsets in sporting history.
