The International Children's Games are a multi-sport competition involving young athletes aged between 12 and 15 held every year. The aim of this event is to create a better understanding among children of different cultural backgrounds, as well as promoting peace and harmony.
The International Children's Games was founded by Slovenian sports instructor Metod Klemenc. The first International Children's Games and Cultural Festival was held in Celje Yugoslavia in 1968 with teams from nine European cities.
The games are currently held every year. The Games have been an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event since 1991. Since 1994 there have also been a Winter Children's Games.
Sports on the program have included golf, judo, swimming, athletics, handball, tennis, volleyball and football.
On the winter sports program, sports include alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, figure skating freestyle skiing, ice hockey, snowboard and speed skating.
