A description of all the physical tests conducted at the AFL annual pre-draft combine, with information about how the tests relate to football performance. This video was produced before some changes to the testing list in 2017, when the beep test and was replaced with the yo-yo intermittent test and the 3-kilometre time-trial was reduced to a 2km run. Tom Brady's NFL Combine Lowlights

Tom Brady, one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks ever, has done some great things in his career, but his performances at the 2000 pre-draft combine is not one of them. His poor effort affected his chances. He was picked 199 overall in the draft, and he was the 7th quarterback to be picked. The NFL won’t let me show the video of his performance, but here is someone else trying to match his scores.

Following McDavid at the 2015 NHL Draft Combine

The 2015 NHL Draft Combine has some new testing protocols, and a new location. It is now much easier to watch the action, and here is a video following the potential top draft pick Connor McDavid as he progresses through the fitness tests. Note the new vertical jump procedure using a force plate, and the Y-balance test. See descriptions of all the tests, and all results from 2015.

New Balance Test for NHL Combine – Y Balance

A new balance test was added to the NHL Combine in 2015, called the Y Balance Test. This test is a dynamic test performed in a single-leg stance that requires strength, flexibility, core control and proprioception. This is the latest in a series of balance and core stability type tests that they have trialed over the years. It looks like a pretty complex test to perform, but seems a good objective measure of balance. Previously they have used a balance board, single-leg squats and a Hex Agility test (like the like the hexagon test). See more about the Y Balance Test.
