For many of you, it is more than a lifetime ago. I was just 8 at the time and a budding sports enthusiast.

It was the first time my home country Australia had qualified, and soccer (as we called it) was making a rare appearance in the news. West Germany emerged victorious, defeating the Netherlands in the final match to claim their second World Cup title (Australia not scoring a goal in their three matches).

In tennis, the Grand Slam tournaments continued to showcase the talents of legendary players such as Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert. Connors dominated the men’s circuit, winning three out of the four Grand Slam titles, while Evert asserted her dominance in the women’s game with victories at the French Open and the US Open.
