Kiteboarding is a group of sports where participants stand on a board and use a kite for power, the most familiar discipline will be kitesurfing. The sport demands a unique combination of physical strength, technical skill, and strategic thinking, making it one of the most exciting and challenging disciplines in water sports.

Kiteboarding

The version of kiteboarding at the Olympics will be the exciting fast-paced Formula Kite class, comprising a foil kite and a board with a hydrofoil. As the windsurfer picks up speed, the hydrofoil generates lift, allowing the board to soar above the water’s surface. This results in impressive speeds and a thrilling display for spectators.

The Road to Paris

The Paris Olympics only has one new sport, breakdancing. However, there can be new sports added if they form part of an existing sport. Prior to the Rio Olympics in 2016, kitesurfing was announced as a replacement for windsurfing, but that decision was reversed, much to the disappointment of kiteboarding fans. Lobbying by the windsurfing community has ensured that windsurfing remained part of the Games, and has kept kiteboarding out. In Paris 2024, both windsurfing and kiteboarding are on the program, so everyone is happy.

Formula Kite: The Official Equipment

Formula Kite is the class of kiteboarding that will be featured in the Olympics. It uses a hydrofoil kiteboard paired with a ram-air kite, offering an exhilarating blend of speed and agility. One of the unique aspects of the Formula Kite class is its allowance for different models from various manufacturers to compete. This stands in contrast to the one-design concept used in windsurfing events, which mandates a single design for all competitors.

Watch the Water

The stage is set in the picturesque city of Marseille on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Here, 40 riders—20 men and 20 women—will compete for medals in this new sailing discipline. Whether you’re a seasoned kiteboarder, a newcomer to the sport, or just a sports fan interested in watching athletes at the peak of their abilities, the Olympic Games kiteboarding event promises to deliver a thrilling competition.
