Whistler Downhill Ski Course

When I first posted this video in 2010, I was in awe of the footage of a world-class downhill skiing course from the view of the skiier. Nowadays with GoPro cameras, it is very common to get the athlete’s view of them performing their sport.
Here is the 1995 Men’s Downhill course on Whistler Mountain.

Great Curling Shot

Canadian Jennifer Jones with her best curling shot, to win the 2006 Scott Tournament of Hearts. It is the last rock on the 10th end, and she needed this very difficult shot to come off to win. You don’t have to know the rules, just their response is enough to tell you that they pulled off something special.

Long Track Speed Skating World Record

There are long and short track speed skating events. Here is South Korean Lee Kang-Seok breaking the world record in the 500-metre long track race at the 2007 world speed skating championships held in in Salt Lake City, with a time of 34.25 seconds. You wont get much information from the German commentary, but you can see the style and grace of long track skating.

Never Give Up – Bradbury Speed Skating Gold
January 12th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Speed Skating
From Salt Lake City in 2002 – Australians will remember these Games for the nation’s first-ever gold medal at Winter Olympics level – Steven Bradbury’s win in the short track speed skating when his rivals in the final all fell like nine pins. It appeared to be his plan all along, pity you don’t see his facial expression as he realizes he has done the impossible.

Clip of skeleton girls from the 2010 Winter Olympics. These girls could be considered crazy, racing down the track at speeds up to 130 km/h (80 mph), with no steering or braking mechanism.

If you think Winter Olympics and Ice Hockey, it comes down to the so-called ‘Miracle on Ice’ from the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, when the USA team made up of amateur and collegiate players upset the favorites USSR in a medal round match, and subsequently went on to win the gold medal.

Cool Running Jamaican Bobsled Team
January 12th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Bobsled
Video of the original Jamaican Bobsled team, from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary Canada, that inspired the movie ‘Cool Runnings’ can’t be shown here. This trailer of the movie is much more entertaining anyway. In the movie they show the original footage of when they crashed, but many other parts of the true story have been changed or embellished for the movie.
