For many people this race will be remembered for the inspirational effort by John Stephen Akwani who finished the race injured and in pain, but determined to finish for his country.

Italian Dorando Pietri needed to be helped across the finish line, and was initially declared the winner before being disqualified in favor of Johnny Hayes of the USA.
