Iceland at the Winter Olympics
Since joining the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympic Games in Switzerland, Iceland has just missed one edition which is the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympic Games in Japan.
The Scandinavian nation has already won four medals in athletics, judo and handball but is still seeking its first-ever medal at the Winter Games. This is indeed ironic since the nation has cold weather throughout the year and is surrounded with lots of glaciers including the Vatnajökull which has the largest glacier mass in Europe.
Iceland sent five athletes to compete in two sports at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and unfortunately all of the nation’s competitors bowed out early on their respective events and failed to advance into the next round. In 2018, the country had five athletes in Pyeongchang, competing in men's and women's alpine and cross-country skiing.
