Ice Sledge Racing at the Winter Paralympic Games
Ice sledge speed racing was a Winter Paralympic sport where contestants use a lightweight sledge and propel themselves using two poles. The sport is contested using a speed skating rink with a 400 meters (1,300 ft) circumference.
Ice sledge racing was a demonstration event at the first Winter Paralympics in 1976. It was an official Paralympic sport on five occasions, between 1980-1988 and 1994-1998. The events were held indoors for the first time at the 1994 Paralympics in Lillehammer.
In 1998, the last time the sport was held at the Paralympics, there were races for men and women over 100m, 500, 1000m and 1500m. Norwegian athletes dominated the event.
