Asian Cup History

The Asian Cup was first held in 1956 in Hong Kong. Until 2004, it was held every four years.

Due to an increasingly demanding sporting calendar with the Summer Olympic Games and the European Football Championship held in the same year, the event schedule was changed so the next event was in 2007 and every four years thereafter.

Australia joined the Asian confederation in 2007 and hosted and won the Asian Cup in 2015.

In 1999, the number of teams increased from 16 to 24.

Countries like Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran have been very successful, each winning the tournament multiple times. See winnners.
