Olympic Gymnastics Side Horse Vault
Sidehorse vault was one of the nine events that was a part of the gymnastics program during the 1924 Olympics. The event was conducted only for men during the games. It was the only time side horse vault was a part of the Summer Olympics after which it was permanently dropped from the program.
The event was an individual competition in which each gymnast performed their routine on the side horse vault apparatus. The format of the event was similar to the current day vault event with the only difference being the apparatus used.
Seventy gymnasts from nine different nations, France, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, the United States, Luxembourg, Italy, Great Britain, Switzerland, and Finland, took part in the event. Only 22 of the seventy athletes who contested were able finish with a score of 9.50 or better.
Athletes from the hosting nation France dominated the event by sweeping all the three spots at the podium. Albert Séguin took the gold medal by finishing with a perfect score of 10.0. Both Jean Gounot and François Gangloff finished with the same score of 9.93 and were both awarded with the silver medal. Stane Hlastan and Stane Derganc, both from Yugoslavia, finished in the fourth and fifth place.
