This is a part of the guide for inventing a new sport. To get your sport played by someone other than yourself, and spread the word about your fantastic new idea, you need a promotional plan. Here are some of the things you should consider. Make sure you are ready for when it takes off!
Ideas for promoting your sport
- Get a web presence: You need to have your new sport idea online so other people can find out about it. The first thing I recommend is to list it on this website! (see submit new sport). Assuming you have come up with a name, you should also register your own website URL and create a website. There are sites where you can create a website for free, such as Blogger, Wix, Weebley and Wordpress.
- Social Networking. At least make a twitter account and facebook page for the sport, and link to these from your website. Get all your friends to like and follow the pages. You need to start spreading the word.
- YouTube: make a promotion video, images of people playing the sport, and upload it to YouTube. Make sure you put a link to your website on the YouTube description, and also in the video. Get people subscribing to your YouTube channel.
- Make a Media Release: You could create a media release and send it to your local paper, or even further afield.
- Hold a tournament. Promote a tournament of your sport at your school, workplace or local gym. Get lots of people to play it. If it really is as good as you think, the excitement from people playing your new sport and word of mouth will be your friend.
- Gret Funding? One way to promote your idea and get the funds to make it grow is using crowd-sourced funding, like Kickstarter. Once the sport gains popularity you will have a great marketing opportunity with uniforms and equipment and associated products.
