This Central African country first participated in the Summer Games in 1972. Their National Olympic Committee (Comité Olympique Gabonais) established in 1965 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1968 was only able to send one athlete to Munich, West Germany. Boxer Joseph Mbouroukounda was Gabon's sole representative and he fought in the men's featherweight division.
They missed the next two Summer Games (1976 and 1980) and came back for the 1984 Summer Games which was held in Los Angeles, California, USA with four athletes. From this point on, Gabon has never missed the Summer Games. But from their debut all the way to 2008, Gabon has never won any Olympic medal but they busted out the champagne for the first time in August 11, 2012 when Taekwondoin Anthony Obame won the silver for the men's 80kg weight class in London.
Gabon, like most African countries, has never participated in the Winter Olympics.
