Faroe Islands at the Olympics
The Faroe Islands, a self-governing region of Denmark since 1948, are located in the North Atlantic Sea between Iceland and Norway. Sport is governed by the Faroese Confederation of Sports & Olympic Committee, though the territory has been campaigning for International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition for more than 40 years.
At the Olympic Games, Faroese athletes only compete as representatives of its mother country Denmark. At the Paralympic Games it is a different story, with the Faroe Islands first competing at the Summer Paralympic Games in 1984, and in every edition since then.
The most recognized athlete from the Faroe Islands is swimmer Pál Joensen, who has represented Denmark at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games.
The Faroe Islands are recognized by many sporting International Federations including FIFA, and their inclusion at the Olympic Games is endorsed by Denmark and some other nearby countries. It may be just a matter of time before they get recognition and they are able to compete under heir own flag at the Olympics.
