Fitness Testing FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about fitness testing in general. There are also questions and answers about specific tests.

Where can I find some more fitness testing information?

Where can I find some norms?

This is the most often asked question. I have included normative data (norms) where available. If there are none supplied, you will just have to search around to find something suitable. Some of the books listed in the further reading section of the fitness guide have norm tables included, and some of the books on the fitness testing books store may also be suitable. Do not e-mail me for normative data, as the reason they are not on my page is that I probably do not have any. See more about fitness testing norms.

What is the source of the norms on your website?

I have listed the source of the norm table when it is known. If there is none listed, I do not know the source. See more about fitness testing norms.

I cannot find any norms for a particular test

Not having norms isn't necessarily a problem if you are just interested in monitoring improvements. You can still rank the participants within their own group to see how they stand compared to their peers.

Can I use your website information in my assignment?

Generally you can. For more details and for all copyright information, go here

How do I reference information from this site?

You can use this general reference style and insert the correct date, or change the details to reflect the specific page your are referring to.

Where can I find results for particular tests?

It is not easy to find fitness test results online, particularly if you are looking for a group similar to yourself or your team to compare to. I regularly search online for test results for certain tests, and have some of them listed under fitness test results. If you cannot find any online, you could approaching your local clubs or e-mail the fitness coach of other teams in your sport for some results. They may not give you all the data, but you may get some averages for you to compare to.

What are good tests for my sport?

It is important to choose fitness tests that are appropriate for a particular sport and the fitness level of the participants. Read the fitness testing guide section on selecting tests. First look to see if there are standard protocols already in use for your sport. National teams often publish a list of test that they put their charges through. If there are already tests commonly used for your sport, then it is morel likely you will be able to find results to compare your athletes. I have suggested test lists for some sports.

What does that ?! term mean?

You may come across a few words on this website that you do not understand. I have set up a glossary page to list such words with their meanings.
