East Timor (Timor-Leste) at the Olympics
Timor-Leste, also referred to as East Timor, is a small southeast Asian country that was once a Portuguese colony and also a part of Indonesia. The nation competed as part of Indonesia from 1984 to 1996. Athletes from East Timor first competed in the 2000 Olympics as individual athletes, in the sports of Athletics (2), Boxing and Weightlifting.
In 2004 they sent their first official team to the Olympic Games.
Timor-Leste's best result was in 2000, when Weightlifter Martinho de Araujo placed 20th in the men's weightlifting competition. The nation is still seeking its first-ever Olympic medal.
Timor-Leste also participated in the just recently concluded 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and has sent three athletes to compete in athletics and cycling.
