Rahul Sharad Dravid (born January 11, 1973, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India) is a former Indian cricketer and captain, widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He is universally acknowledged as one of the finest and most respected ambassadors of the game. Dravid made his international debut on April 1996 against Sri Lanka. He was often referred to as “The Wall” by the media and fans due to his long and steady innings at the crease.
Greatest Sporting Achievements
Rahul Dravid holds the longest streak of consecutive Tests since debut (94), greatest number of innings since debut before being dismissed for a duck, best career test average among the contemporary batsmen (58.55), involved in the highest partnership (331 runs) in the history of One-Day International cricket with Sachin Tendulkar vs. New Zealand. In 2004, he was named ICC Player of the year.
He was named one of the best five cricketers of the year by the Wisden Cricketers Almanac in 2000. In 2012, he is the fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket and the second Indian cricketer to score 10,000 runs in Tests and ODIs. He was honored a Bradman Award in 2012 and was given the “Padma Bhushan” award, India’s third highest civilian award.
Why Was He So Good?
Dravid was always the go-to man whenever there’s a crisis situation like the jobs other team members didn’t want to do. He was his country’s quiet savior in the dressing room and most especially the rescuer out in the middle; he was the cement that held his team while the flair players expressed themselves. He was a versatile team player. Rahul Dravid is regarded one of the last classical Test match batsmen because he was armed with an orthodox technique drilled into him by Keki Tarapore.
