Also referred to as the Congo Republic, this state is a former French territory which means they have quite a bit of French or at the very least European influence in various aspects of their lives which definitely includes sports.
Inevitably, soccer is the most popular sport and their national team, nicknamed The Red Devils, won the African Games in 1965 and won their first African Cup of Nations which took place in Yaounde, Cameroon in the early 70's.
The Republic of Congo is also not shy when it comes to hosting international events. They hosted the 1965 All-Africa Games and the African Championships in Athletics in 2004 was held in their beloved Alphonse Massamba Debat stadium or simply called the Revolution Stadium which has a capacity of 25,000 spectators.
Some of the rising stars of soccer also are from the Republic of Congo such as Sita Milandou who currently is a member of the Omani Giants and Mael Lepicier Tsonga who is full back for the Belgian team Mons. Basketball and tennis are also rising in popularity among the young Congolese mostly due to the success of various Congolese players like Serge Ibaka, who plays in the NBA (Oklahoma City Thunder) and won a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, whose impressive performance took him to the semi-finals at the Australian Open (2010) and Wimbledon (2011 and 2012).
