Athletes compete in six broad categories at the Winter Paralympics, as listed below. They are the same categories as used for the Summer Paralympics. Within each of the disability categories, athletes are classified or graded based on the severity of the disability, with individuals competing against those with a similar degree of impairment.
- Amputees
- Cerebral palsy
- Intellectual disability / mentally handicapped
- Spinal cord injury / wheelchair
- Visually impaired
- Les Autres (meaning 'the others'), including athletes with motor disability, dwarfism, multiple sclerosis, and congenital disorders) blind runners at the 2012 London Paralympics
