Hillclimbing is a sport of motorsport discipline, where drivers race on an uphill course in a time trial format, where each car navigates the entire course alone against a clock. The objective is to complete the course as fast as possible. The driver that completes the course in the fastest time is declared the winner. The sport originated in France in the late nineteenth century and is currently popular in Europe and North America.
There are several hillclimbing racing events that are conducted every year in several countries. Some of the most popular races are:
- Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - It is an premier international hill climbing race held in the United States, where many Indy and Rally champions have competed.
- French hill climb championship - This series has one of the most competitive courses in all of hillclimbing, where many new F2 drivers take part.
- Italian championships - The courses in this series are some of the most challenging and also some of the longest in all of hillclimbing.
- British Hill Climb Championship - British hillclimbing races are shorter in distance compared to races held in other countries, usually less than one mile. Races are conducted for several engine classifications.
