Canoe events at the Olympic Games are divided into Canoe Sprint and Canoe Slalom.
In Canoe Sprint, competitors race on calm water over 200m, 500m, and 1000m distances. There are two disciplines: Kayak (K), where paddlers sit and use a double-bladed paddle, and Canoe (C), where paddlers kneel and use a single-bladed paddle.
In Canoe Slalom, competitors navigate a white-water course, passing through upstream and downstream gates as quickly as possible. This category also features Kayak (K) with a double-bladed paddle and Canoe (C) with a single-bladed paddle. Slalom events are held for men and women, with a kayak cross event added in 2024.
Trivia
- In Paris 2024, the Fox sisters had a clean sweep of all the women's canoe slalom events, Jessica winning the K1 and C1 slalom, and Noemie winning the new event kayak cross.
