Calva

Calva is boules-type sport which is only played in Spain. The sport traces its origins to the pre-Roman times.

Calva was developed from a game played by shepherds who threw stones at bull’s horns for entertainment. The bull's horn has been replaced by a peice of wood, which is called a calva. The wood is bend at an angle, somewhat shaped like a horn. The stone was also replaced with a cylinder of iron called the marro. The term calva comes from the field in which the game is played.

The calva is supported on one of its sides. The aim of the game is to knock down the calva by throwing the marro from a position 14.5 meters away.

Players can have 25 attempts to hit the calva, and the player also has two practice throws. The field in which this sport is played is about 25 meters in length and 5 meters in width.
