Brunei at the Olympics
Brunei had established their National Olympic Committee in 1984 which was recognized by the international community and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) the very same year. In 1988, Brunei (as Brunei Darussalam) did participate in the Olympics by sending a single official for swimming in Seoul, South Korea.
It will be eight years before Brunei would again participate in the 1996 Summer Games and this time, by sending an athlete. Prince Abdul Hakeem Jefri Bolkiah represented Brunei in a single event skeet shooting where he ranked 49th overall in Atlanta, Geogia, USA.
In 1996, 2000 and 2004 they sent a single athlete. In 2000, they sent runner Haseri Asli who unfortunately was not able to advance. Prince Abdul Hakeem Jefri Bolkiah again represented the country on the same event in Sydney, Australia. In 2004, Brunei again sent a one-man delegation by sending runner Jimmy Anak Ahar who also was not able to advance.
Brunei was planning to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but was not able to register athletes in time to the International Olympic Committee. In 2012, Brunei sent three athletes to London, England including their first-ever female Olympic athlete. Swimmer Anderson Lim and runners Maziah Mahusin and Ak Hafiy Tajuddin Rositi were the biggest delegation that Brunei has ever had at that time. The then nineteen-year old hurdler Maziah Mahusin was not part of the originally planned delegation but since the IOC was pressing Brunei, along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar, to include female athletes in their delegations, Mahusin made the list even though she was not expected to pass the qualifying standard for the Olympics. None of the 2012 Brunei delegation did advance.
Brunei also has never participated in a single Winter Games.
