Belize has been influenced by many cultures and that also reflects in their sport interests. Traditionally, the typical Belizean would play games that are closely related to Bible games but when they grow up, they tend to like sports like soccer largely because of the British. They love playing and watching soccer and most also like basketball. Although Belize has never been a sport superpower, one can’t help but feel just how important sports are in the Belizean culture.
Belize has participated in the Olympic Games since 1968. In 1968 and 1972, Belize was known as British Honduras and has always been represented in the Summer Olympic Games except for when they joined the American-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. Sadly, no Belizean has won an Olympic medal yet but they do have some who made their mark in the basketball scene like Milt Palacio who played in the National Basketball Association for various teams in his seven year career (1999 – 2006) like Vancouver Grizzlies, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz and Toronto Raptors. He also played for various European leagues like the Partizan is Serbia and helped them win the Serbian Cup, Serbian League and Adriatic League.
