Balance is the ability to stay upright or stay in control of body movement. Balance is an important component of many sports, although it is seldom tested. We use our eyes, ears and 'body sense' to help retain our balance.
There are two types of balance: static and dynamic. Static balance is maintaining equilibrium when stationary, while dynamic balance is maintaining equilibrium when moving. Dynamic balance is an important component of agility. In children, static balance testing may be used as a measure of motor control development.
Balance can be improved through practice and training within specific sports.
Testing Balance
Simple balance tests involve attempts to stay upright, either on one foot, the ball of your foot or with eyes closed. On this site there are a range of balance tests. Some balance tests may be combined with an ataxiameter, which quantifies head movements. Also teeter boards are often used to measure static balance.
