The club throw is an event as part of athletics at the Paralympics. It has been on the program of the Summer Paralympics Games since the first Games in 1960. A men's event has been held at each Paralympics since 1960 (except 1972). The women's event was held from 1960 until 1992 (except 1972). After a break it was reinstated for the 2012 London Olympics.
The club throw event involves throwing a wooden bowling pin-shaped club for maximal distance. The club weighs about 14 oz / 400 grams. It is the Paralympics version of the Olympic Games hammer throw event.
Each athlete throws the club from a sitting position on a rigid frame. The end of the club closest to the throwing line is used for measuring the distance of the throw. The athlete with the farthest throw is declared as the winner.
There are events for different levels of disability. The events are divided into classes based on type and severity of the athletes’ disability. There are competitions for athletes in the classes F31, F32 and F51.
There was also a Precision Club Throw event at the 1976 and 1988 Paralympic Games.
