Armenia has a very rich sports history. As part of the former USSR, their athletes won many Olympic medals competing under their flag.
Chess is Armenia's traditional and still one of their most popular sports and they have been doing very well in it in the international stage. Wrestling is also one of the strong points for Armenians in the Olympics as well as weightlifting. But football or soccer is the most popular sport in Armenia.
Armenia started participating in the Olympics as an independent nation in the 1994 Winter Olympics held in Lillehammer, and Armenia has been represented at the Summer since 1996.
Armenia was part of the USSR for a long time and the first Armenian in modern Olympic history was Hrant Shahinyan in gymnastics won two golds and silvers at the Summer Olympics in Helsinki (1952). Other great gymnasts from Armenia won Olympic and other world championships like Albert Azaryan, Eduard Azaryan and Artur Akopyan. Armenians won 4 medals despite of having only 5 athletes participating under the Unified Team in the 1992 Summer Olympics held in Barcelona. Three of which are gold medals.
