American JumpBall - a new sport

American JumpBall is a new sport created by Chrisano Jeremia from Indonesia (but currently in Fresno) in 2021. It's a sport that mixes basketball, American football and other sports.  The objective of the game is to put the ball through the basketball hoops more than the opposition and eventually, score more points than the opponent while defending against their attack.

Equipment Required

Sport Description

The American JumpBall can be played in a basketball court. It is played with 5 players on each team from two opposing teams, with substitute players up to 7 for 40-minute games or up to 10 for 48 & 60-minute games. Use a basketball as the ball to play with, even with smaller size ball is still playable, as long as it is not flat and bounced optimally.

The game is played in 4 quarters with 10, 12 or 15 minutes for each quarter. The clock will continued to count down even if it out of bounds like in FIBA, so extra balls are necessary nearby. The clock will stop counting down for extra point tries from when the ball went through the rim up to start of next possession, free throws from fouls, time outs, and when it's 2 minutes left before the half time and 2 minutes left before the end of regulation.

Numbers of time-outs available for each teams throughout a game is 6 for 40-minute games, 7 for 48-minute games, and 8 for 60-minute games. 1 time-out for each quarters and an extra 1 for final 2 minutes of 1st half and 2nd half, plus 1 time-out for each extra time halves for 40-minute games. For 48-minute games, there's 1 extra time-out for the 4th quarter that can be taken before or during the final 2 minutes. For 60-minute games, there's another 1 extra time-out for 2nd quarter that can be taken before or during the final 2 minutes too.

For optimal observation on foul decisions and etc., it's better to have 4 referees at each corner for one-half of the court and if the possession move, the referees also have to move along with the possession.

The match begins with both teams facing each other lined up similar to how American Football is with offense lining up one lineman, one quarterback and the rest can filled either backs and/or receivers positions while defense lining up one lineman, one safety and the rest filled either corners and/or linebackers positions. One safety because there's only one person that can be under the basket for uncounted time.

At the start of the game, the ball is in the offense's possession and placed with the offensive lineman. However, since the offensive and defensive lineman lined up and will clashed with each other like in American Football without standardize protective gears, they will be lining up similar with how it is in Sumo. When the quarterback shout their code after many times and the offensive lineman throw the ball at the center of the court under to the quarterback, the defensive lineman cannot start dashing forward until the offensive lineman put his/her passing hand on the ground parallel with the other hand on the ground and he/she can start to dash forward too, just like in Sumo. Before the quarterback get the ball from the offensive lineman, the other offensive players lining up can perform motion like in American Football while the quarterback shouts the code.

For the offense, once they start their possession, they have 24 seconds to try to score some points. When the quarterback get the ball from the offensive lineman, the play start. While the quarterback held the ball behind the half court, the play rules are similar to American Football. The ball holder can hold the ball without the need to dribble the basketball and have to avoid the approaching defensive players who could and would body-charged them or strip & steal the ball from them. There can be a lot of passing occurred behind the half court in 8 seconds before the 8-seconds violation occurred and the pass can be forward too unlike in NFL. The physical rules at this moment is also similar like American Football or Flag Football. While the ball still behind the half-court line, the defense can stripped the ball from the ball holder more aggressively and it's not considered a foul, even if it was a body charge, not a tackle. When the receivers/backs run their routes, the defense that cover them can distract them from their routes with hand checking like in Basketball and bump & run technique similar in American Football.

After the ball was thrown or brought from behind the half-court line over to the other half, the play rules changed, similar to Basketball/Streetball. The ball handler needs to dribble the basketball at most 2 steps after stepping over the half-court line to move around but the dribble rules follow Streetball's. In addition, regular backcourt violation is in order too. For defense, there can be one defensive player stay in the paint area around the restricted area and even behind the baseline with uncounted time, but when there's second defensive players in the paint and so forth, there's 3 seconds to left one player in the paint area, unless there are offensive players positioned nearby the paint area too. Also, when the defensive team stole the ball while it haven't crossed over the half-court line yet, or sack the offensive players by body-charged them and they fumbled and it's recovered by defense, the play rules changed similar to Basketball/Streetball again, physical rules too. There's no travel, double, kick ball or illegal dribbling violation for the ball handler. For defense, hand checking is legal and reaching the ball in attempt to steal while touching the handler's hand is not a foul, unless it's grabbing and/or pulling. Ball handler can protect the ball with their off-hand to put some distance or to slap the hands of coming attempt to steal the ball. Giving a little push when crossing over a defender like MJ did cause the defense is off balance or when running off-ball/routes like Miller did to MJ is legal. Shoulder charging's restriction is lessened, unless it's intended for harm, not for sporting reasons. Tripping the offensive/defensive players using up to the player's hip and body-charging resulted in foul, but not shoulder charge. Body-charging here is when defenders run full speed to body charge the offensive player like in Ice Hockey, but shoulder charge is usually when the shoulders are the parts that made contact and the contacts between defensive and offensive players are not full speed, rather it's when their body were close to each other. Jersey & accessories puling or arm pulling also resulted in foul. Screen is legal as long as the player that set it up is standing up stationary and put both feet are on the ground, preferably one in front of the other to able absorb more impact from the defensive player. The hands can be used to absorb impact and pushing after contact, not before contact. They can also screen the defensive player that cover the receiver's route. The screen can move after contact to disrupt the defensive efforts.

This also includes the lineman battle, where the battle is similar like Sumo Wrestling. Slapping, pushing, throws, and twists are legal. But leg tripping, tackling, and holding neck to head are illegal. Technically, since the lineman battle is like Sumo, they're the only who can perform 'pulling' for twists and throws techniques so they can pull jersey to perform necessary legal technique, but things like pulling down pants to distract is illegal. Of course, the regular lineman techniques and regulations are also implied since the objective of the battle is different than Sumo. But when there's a second defender tried to blitz, the offensive lineman can tried to disrupt their movement by extending both arms to hold two defenders or by pushing the defensive lineman to get in the way of the blitz. If the lineman decided to cover instead of charging, the offensive lineman could charge instead and try to bring down the defender if they want to, block using hands, or try to pancake them before the ball cross the half-court line. When the ball crossed the half-court line, the block using hands must turn into a screen in less than 2 seconds or it's an offensive foul and changed possession.

When the ball went out of bound, there's a different way to throw it inbound. In American JumpBall, it's possible to score points straight from the inbound, no need for second touch. If it's scored from the baseline behind the rim, it's worth 2 points. If it's scored from sidelines in front of the half-court line, it's worth 3 points. If it's from the sidelines beyond the half-court line, it's worth 4 points. If it's from the other side baseline, it's worth 5 points. Instead of a regular inbound, this will be similar to line-out in rugby, where both team lining up in front of the inbounder, which also includes rugby lifting if the inbounder chose to pass. This way the defense can try to block the straight shot attempt. If the offensive team got the ball from 2/3-point line-out's pass, they can pass it to the area behind the half-court line and the rule will changed to American Football until it crossed the half-court line again to Basketball/Streetball. In addition, the inbounder cannot move from the spot or feint/fake its throwing movement, meaning the attempt to pass or shoot must be done in one follow-through motion.

The way to score points in American JumpBall is a little bit different than your regular Basketball. Goaltending is allowed in American JumpBall, that's why it is encouraged to score in a manner of attacking the basket like layups or dunks to have less chance of getting goaltending block. While attacking the basket, that player can pass it to his/her teammate that attack the basket too to try to fool the defender that tried to block. That teammate could try to pass it again to another player until someone score or got blocked. Imagine like Volleyball where the setter try to attack but then fake it to pass it to his/her teammate who either could smash it or pass it again since there's no limit to how many alley-oop can be made. Also when offensive player start their steps to attack the basket, no pushing/rough contact from the defensive player or it'll resulted in shooting fouls. The defense cannot do a block from underneath the rim, as that action would resulted in violation and the possession restart with line-out from the same amount of point that the offense attempted to get. If this violation happened when the offense attempt a touchdown, it'll reward the 1-point free throw or 2-point free throw. However, if the offensive players did a trick shot, goaltending rule is applied until it bounces off the rim, even if it's a bank shot. Then even if the ball was about to go in and bouncing or rolling around the rim, like in Beer Pong, they can try to get it out without getting the violation while the offensive players will fight for the ball. Trick shot includes kneeling/seating shot, underhand shot, overhead throw, one hand throw (not hook shot), don't look shot or back-to-basket scoop shot, behind the back shot, and other unique shot considered trick shot. Trick shot doesn't include regular jumper and runner/floater. Goaltending rule is also applied when the shooter shot from behind the half-court line, regular jumper and runner/floater included. Also, a block with contact will be considered legal as long as the body of the blocker is mostly straight and the hand can move around to reach the ball like in Basketball and/or Volleyball and the blocking hand touch most of the ball with little skin-to-skin contact. Besides blocking, the defense can try to stop or distract the attack to basket movement with taking the charge stance before they jump off the ground. A charging foul will happened when the offensive player clash with set defensive player and the offense's knees go up/forward.

Free throw worth 1 point. Scoring inside the 3-point line worth 2 points. Shooting from beyond the arc worth 3 points. Dunk or scoring from an alley-oop pass worth 4 points. Shooting from beyond the half-court line worth 5 points. Scoring from the first pass, regular or bounced, beyond the half-court line worth 6 points or touchdown. After someone score, they have the opportunity to gain extra point from free throw line and it's worth 1 point. They have the option to try to get 2 points but there'll be a defender underneath the basket ready to try to block the shot. The defender will stands behind the restricted zone line and could begin charging to block as soon as the shooter received the passing ball from the defender. The defender cannot attempt a pass that made the shooter go out of the free throw area. Meanwhile, scoring touchdown resulted in options to shoot from either the free throw line options or the 3-point line, which worth 3 points and after the shot their feet cannot land inside the 3-point line. This extra point situation is similar to when a player shoot technical free throw in Basketball, meaning no rebounders. When an offensive player got fouled during the act of scoring or a shooting foul occurred, they got 1 free throw attempt and another possession. When it's a non-shooting foul inside 3-point line, it's a line-out from 2-point baseline and if the foul is outside 3-point line, it's a line-out from 3-point sidelines. When a player got his/her 5th fouls, he/she will be fouled out of the game. When a team got their 5th defensive fouls or team fouls, the next non-shooting foul resulted in Faceoff and it's worth 2 points. In addition, shooting fouls resulted in choices between the 1-point free throw/the 2-point free throw. Team foul will reset after each quarters. Trash talking will not be charged with technical fouls.
After one team score and did the extra points tries, the other team will start the next possession from the half-court line like before.

If the scores are tied at the end of regulation, the game will turn into the Faceoff. The Faceoff, like in hockey, is when one offensive player facing off with one defensive player one-on-one. Also like in hockey, at the start of the Faceoff, the offensive player can hold the ball or dribble it around behind the half-court line and the defensive player can be anywhere behind the baseline below the rim. When the offensive player crossed the half-court line, the ball must be dribbled even though some rules are like Streetball, with no travel, and can picked up the ball at the start of the approach to attack the basket. The defensive player must try to block, steal or disrupt the offensive player movement or shot. Each teams got 5 tries and if it's still tied, it went to sudden death until the winner is declare, just like in Soccer/Football. For the playoffs, there will be extra times of 5 minutes for 2 halves at the most. If after 1 half of extra time a winner was declared, its game over. But if after 2 halves of extra time the game is still tied, it will went to Faceoff, just like in Soccer/Football.
